Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, August 17-For the second straight game reliever Hut Smith could not hold a one-run lead in the ninth inning as the Newark Bears lost in ten innings to the Long Island Ducks, 7-3, Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Ducks swept the three-game series in Newark.

Smith entered Sunday's game with a 3-2 lead, but Justin Davies delivered a run-scoring double with one out to tie the score and force extra innings. In the tenth inning the Ducks plated four runs off of Alex Pena and Andy Hazlett. Luis Saturria's sacrifice fly gave the Ducks a 4-3 lead in the tenth and proved to be the game-winning RBI. Pena (0-1) took the loss for the Bears, allowing 3 runs and 2 hits.

Newark starter Tom Stepka tied his season-high by pitching eight strong innings. The right-hander allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, and seven hits. He had a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning, but Paul Esposito's fielding error led to an unearned run that tied the game, 2-2. The Bears, though, took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth on a Danny Clyburn RBI single before the fateful ninth inning.

Esposito and Ryan Minor each had two hits for the Bears; while Tom Caputo led Long Island with a 3-4, 2 RBI performance.

The Bears will open up a three-game series at The Den Monday evening at 7:05 PM against the Camden Riversharks. Alberto Castillo (5-5) will pitch for the Bears in the series opener.
