Berkshire Black Bears News Release

Sweet revenge was on the Berkshire agenda tonight. Having been swept at Mahaney Diamond one week earlier, the Black Bears were hoping to return the favor with a sweep of their own at Wahconah Park. However, the Jacks got some timely hitting, including a Mark Burke Grand Slam, to overwhelm the boys from Pittsfield 8-2 Saturday night.

Bangor grabbed the lead early against Black Bears' starter Dan Henderson. Barry Paulk doubled to left field, then Donnie Ross singled to left, scoring Paulk to make it 1-0. The Lumber Jacks would increase their lead to 4-1, tacking on three runs in the seventh inning. In the ninth inning, Bangor first baseman Mark Burke struck the fatal blow that ended the hopes for a sweep and redemption of last week. Burke crushed a grand slam over the center field fence against Berkshire reliever Orlando Encarnacion.

Henderson fell to 2-9 with the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits, with four strikeouts over six and a third innings. Bangor starter, John Vigue (5-6) picked up the win, allowing only one run on five hits, and striking out four over eight innings.

Following Sunday's off day, the Black Bears begin a crucial series with the Elmira Pioneers Monday night at Wahconah Park. Success in the three game series is vital to retain hopes for post season action; game time Monday is 7:05pm.
