Camden Riversharks News Release

The Camden Riversharks will host a tribute to Tony Gwynn this Thursday, June 19th during their Atlantic League matchup versus the Long Island Ducks.

In honor of Tony Gwynn, who passed away June 16th, 2014 due to complications from his cancer, the Camden Riversharks will donate $1.90 per walk-up ticket sold at the Campbell's Field Box Office to the American Cancer Society, in reference to his lifelong uniform number, 19. American Cancer Society will have a representative on site to interact with fans and distribute information.

In addition to a pregame moment of silence, the Riversharks will remember Gwynn and all of his vast accomplishments during the game through highlight videos and emphasizing Gwynn's career feats and statistics.

Throughout the tribute, the Riversharks are also partnering with New Jersey Quitline, to inform fans about the dangers of all forms of tobacco, including smokeless tobacco. Gwynn had a connection with the Atlantic League, as his son-in-law Kennard Jones has played with multiple teams in the league throughout his career, most recently with the Bridgeport Bluefish in 2012. Jones also played for the Ducks, Newark Bears, and York Revolution.

Gwynn will be remembered as one of the most prolific hitters in major league history, accumulating 3,141 career hits and a .338 career batting average. Gwynn finished his career with eight batting titles, 15 All-Star nominations, and five Gold Glove awards. He was inducted as a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2007, receiving 97.6% of the votes.
