Albuquerque, N.M., March 6, 2008 - The Albuquerque Thunderbirds are proud to announce, in conjunction with McDonald's, the McDonald's NBA Amateur Slam Dunk Contest, to be held March 8, 11, 13, 14, and 16.
The McDonald's NBA Amateur Slam Dunk Contest will be held starting Saturday, March 8 following the conclusion of the Thunderbirds game against the Austin Toros. Open tryouts will be conducted on both the 8th and Tuesday, March 11. The six best dunkers will then compete in head to head contests on Thursday and Friday, March 13 and 14. The winners from each night will advance to compete in the finals. The finals will be held on Sunday, March 16 and will determine the McDonald's NBA Amateur Slam Dunk Champion. The Champion of the competition will win a $1,000 prize.
Participants in the McDonald's NBA Amateur Slam Dunk Contest are required to be at least 18 years of age and there is a $20 registration fee required for all participants a portion of which will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charity.
"McDonald's has been a terrific partner of the Thunderbirds since our inception and we look forward to working together on the McDonald's NBA Amateur Slam Dunk Contest," said Chris Holland, Chief Operations Officer. "What better way to celebrate the NBA than with a slam dunk contest...We've had a lot of interest from the community and we think this will be a real fun event for everyone to see. If you're 18 and over and can dunk, you have a chance to win $1000!!!"

Albuquerque hits the road Friday, March 7th to take on the Tulsa 66ers at Expo Square Pavilion. The Thunderbirds return home Saturday, March 8th to take on the Austin Toros; game time is set for 7:00 pm at Tingley Coliseum.

The Thunderbirds stay focused on the community by participating in community events such as the Read to Achieve Program as well as D-League Cares. In the past two seasons the Thunderbirds have worked over 3,000 hours in the community, staying dedicated to Albuquerque and New Mexico.
