CALGARY FLAMES RECALL GOALTENDER MIKE VERNON FROM SAINT JOHN FLAMES

Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames Vice-President & General Manager Craig Button announced today goaltender Mike Vernon has been recalled from the Saint John Flames of the American Hockey League and goaltender Kay Whitmore has been assigned to Saint John.

Vernon has appeared in 12 games with Calgary this season posting a 1-6-1 record, a 2.98 GAA and one shut-out. In 775 NHL career games the native of Calgary, AB has a 384-270-92 record, a 2.98 GAA and 27 shut-outs. The Flames re-acquired the 38 year-old netminder from Minnesota on June 23, 2000 in exchange for Dan Cavanaugh and an eighth round choice in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Vernon was originally drafted in the 1981 Entry Draft by the Flames (56th overall).

Whitmore appeared in one game with Calgary early this season posting a 3.10 GAA. In 27 games with Saint John this season Whitmore posted a 7-13-6 record and a 2.48 GAA. In 155 NHL career games Whitmore has recorded a 60-64-16 record, four shut-outs and a 3.55 GAA. The native of Sudbury, ON was the Hartford Whalers' second choice, 26th overall, in the 1985 Entry Draft. The Flames signed Whitmore as a free agent on July 9, 2001.

Calgary plays their sixth game (2-2-1-0) of their current nine-game (16 day) road trip Wednesday, March 13th in Florida against the Panthers. The Flames return home to the Pengrowth Saddledome on Thursday the 21st to play host to the San Jose Sharks.
