Cabrera, Sands Lead Tarpons in Rain-Shortened, 5-4 Win

TAMPA, Fla.- The Tampa Tarpons scored in each of the first three frames and held on to defeat the Bradenton Marauders, 5-4 in five innings, in a rain-shortened opener of a three-game series on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Estevan Florial singled into right-center and scored when Oswaldo Cabrera smashed a first-pitch two-run homer to right field, giving Tampa (14-16, 42-54) at 2-0 lead in the first. Steven Sensley walked and scored on a double by Donny Sands, adding a run in the second.

RHP Jio Orozco made his eighth start with the Tarpons and stranded a pair of runners in each of the first two innings before Bradenton (15-14, 51-44) broke through in the third.

Lucas Tancas reached on a deflected infield single and, with two outs, advanced to third on a base hit by Cal Mitchell. A balk by Orozco scored Tancas and moved Mitchell to second before Deon Stafford and Rodolfo Castro lined back-to-back RBI singles, tying the score at 3-3.

Orozco struck out Lolo Sanchez to end the frame but left the game after yielding a one-out walk in the fourth. The 21-year-old allowed three earned runs on seven hits in three and a third, walking three while striking out four on 79 pitches (46 strikes).

Tampa responded with two more runs off RHP Brad Case in the home half of the third. Florial doubled to right and took third on a groundout by Cabrera before scoring the go-ahead run on a base hit by Alexander Palma through a drawn-in infield.

Diego Castillo and Wilkerman Garcia followed with back-to-back singles, loading the bases. After striking out Sensley, Case walked Sands to force home Palma before getting a fly out by Leonardo Molina to end the frame.

Case (L, 2-3) logged his shortest outing of the season, yielding five earned runs on seven hits in three innings, walking two while striking out three on 77 pitches (52 strikes).

RHP Hobie Harris relieved Orozco with one out in the fourth, inheriting Mason Martin at first base. One out later, Martin took off on a pitch lined for a single by Oneil Cruz. Martin ran through a stop sign at third base and was caught by Garcia in a rundown to end the frame.

Mitchell drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and later scored on a one-out triple off the left field wall by Stafford. Harris (W, 2-2) struck out the next two batters to end the inning and maintain a 5-4 lead of Tampa.

RHP Hunter Stratton retired all six batters he faced in relief of Case, including striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth, before home plate umpire Justin Whiddon order the tarp onto the field. After 34 minutes of heavy rainfall, the game was officially called a Tarpons victory.

Cabrera (1-for-3, HR, 2RBI, R) clubbed his fifth home run of the season. Sands (1-for-1, 2B, BB, 2RBI) logged his fourth multi-RBI game of the season. Castillo (1-for-3) extended his on-base streak to 17 games. Florial (2-for-3, 2B, 2R) tallied his 11thmulti-hit game of the season.

Palma (1-for-3, RBI) played his first game back with the Tarpons since suffering a broken leg that ended his 2018 season on 7/2/18 at Dunedin.

The series continues on Marvel Super Hero™ Nighton Saturday at 6:30 p.m. RHP Trevor Stephan (0-3, 8.74) is scheduled to start against RHP Gavin Wallace (2-4, 3.67). Live play-by-play of the action will be available on the Tampa Tarpons Baseball Network.

On Strikeout Saturday, strikeouts by Tampa pitchers will determine the special of the day. When a Tarpons pitcher strikes out a batter, a select special will be activated for the night (each special lasts 60 minutes). In addition, fans can collect player autographs on the concourse from 5:40-6:00 p.m.
