
Busy Week Ahead for the Thunder

ICE TAKE WEEKEND SET FROM THUNDER- The Indianapolis Ice used a big second period both Friday and Saturday Nights, coming away with a pair of victories. On Friday at the Kansas Coliseum, Indianapolis broke open a 3-1 game with three second period goals. Defenseman Bernie John led the way with four points. Peter Runkel, Anders Strome and Ryan McLean scored goals for Wichita. On Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the Ice broke open a 2-2 game with six second period goals, en route to the 9-4 win. The Ice tied a CHL record, scoring seven power play goals and were again led by Bernie John's five points. Mark Kolesar scored four points for the Thunder, while Peter Runkel added three. The Thunder lost both games despite outshooting the Ice 79-58.
SHOTS NOT EQUALLING WINS- The Thunder are going through a tough stretch, but continue to pile up the shots on their opponents. Through 12 games, the Thunder have been outshot only twice and have not allowed more than 31 shots in a game. The Thunder are allowing a CHL-low 26.25 shots per game and rank third in the CHL, averaging 34.58 shots per game. The result: Wichita is scoring 3.67 goals per game, second only to the Laredo Bucks. The Thunder, however; are allowing a CHL-high 4.67 goals per game.
SPECIAL TEAMS- After starting the season hot in penalty killing, but cold on the power play, Wichita's special teams have done a complete 180. The Thunder are now last in penalty killing, at 75.0%, but rank second in the CHL in power play goals, with 15. The Thunder have scored three shorthanded goals, second only to the Memphis RiverKings.
THUNDER ROOKIES KEEP ROLLING- Forward Anders Strome had two goals this weekend giving him a CHL rookie-high of nine on the season. Meanwhile, defenseman Peter Runkel added four points over the weekend and leads all CHL rookies with nine assists. With 14 points each, Strome and Runkel trail Ed McGrane of Corpus Christi by one point in the CHL rookie scoring race. Overall, Strome is tied for the CHL lead with four power play goals, while Runkel ranks third among all CHL defensemen.
THUNDERBOLTS- Defenseman Les Hrapchak is expected back in the Thunder lineup on Tuesday...Defenseman Chad Mazurak and Trevor Allman are eyeing a December 5th return date versus Lubbock...Fans can receive free tickets to the December 5th game by bringing a new, unwrapped toy, food or coats to either A-OK Pawn Shop location...The donations will benefit Operation Holiday and Toys for Tots...Jason Duda has played in 222 straight games, the longest active streak in the CHL...Only the Laredo Bucks (9) have more scorers with double digits in points than the Thunder (Kolesar (20), Duda (16), Strome, Runkel, Clayton, Calder (14 each)).
