Eagles Fly Past Brahmas

November 17, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Fort Worth Brahmas News Release

Center Riley Nelson (2G/1A) and left wing Ryan Tobler (3A) led a balanced Colorado Eagles offensive attack and helped the visiting Eagles to a 5-2 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas Sunday afternoon at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

The first period of the game looked promising for the Brahmas. Left wing Chad Woollard opened the scoring at the 5:02 mark of the first period when he blasted a short side shot past Eagles goaltender Ryan Bach from just to the right of the Eagles goal. Woollard's goal would be the only one of the opening period, as Brahmas goaltender Tyler Nilsson, who was making his first start of the season on home ice, did not allow an Eagles goal in the first.

In the second period, the tide of the game turned as Colorado scored three consecutive goals. First, left wing Phil Crowe scored on a rebound at the 4:53 mark. Then, Nelson scored his first goal of the game, a powerplay goal, at the 13:07 mark of the period, when his shot from the right side through traffic beat Nilsson cleanly. The Eagles extended their lead to 3-1 late in the period when right wing Greg Pankewicz poked home a rebound at the 18:30 mark.

In the third period, Colorado pushed their lead to 4-1 when defenseman Scott Swanson scored on a deflected shot from just inside the Brahmas blue line at the 8:30 mark of the period. Fort Worth attempted to rally, cutting the Eagles lead back to 4-2 when defenseman Robert Fail scored a powerplay goal from between the circles off a nice pass from center Shawn Roed at the 11:02 mark. The Eagles snuffed out any comeback hopes that the Brahmas had when Nelson scored his second of the game as he picked up a loose puck just outside the Brahmas crease and slipped it past Nilsson with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

Nilsson, a rookie from the University of Calgary, played well in defeat, making 33 saves on the 38 Eagles shots he faced. Bach, who has started every game of the season for Colorado, was solid as well, stopping 14 of the 16 Fort Worth shots sent his way. The loss drops the Brahmas record to 2-8-3 on the season. With the win, Colorado improves to 9-4-1. Fort Worth will try to get back on the winning track this Friday night, Nov. 21, when they host the Laredo Bucks at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
