Bush & Schunk Make Squirrel Soup in Richmond

Richmond, VA- Left-hander Nick Bush hurled seven solid innings, and infielder Aaron Schunk had four hits as the Hartford Yard Goats defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-3 on Friday night at The Diamond in Richmond Virginia. The Yard Goats broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the seventh inning to win for the 16th time in 21 games. Bush surrendered just two runs and recorded seven strikeouts for his fourth win while Schunk provided the offense with three doubles and 2 RBI, as the Yard Goats improved to 8-2 on their two-city 12-game road trip. The victory puts Hartford at 27-16 and 11 games above .500 for the first time since June 9, 2019 (36-25). Hartford sits in second place one-half game behind Somerset in the Northeast Division.

Richmond scored the first run of the game in the first inning off Yard Goats starter Nick Bush, as Diego Rincones singled home Armani Smith with two outs. After stranding a leadoff double in the second inning off Richmond starter Kyle Harrison, the Yard Goats tied the game in the third. Hunter Stovall walked and eventually scored on Michael Toglia's sacrifice fly to make it 1-1. Hartford took a 2-1 lead with a run in the fourth inning. Aaron Schunk led off the inning with the first of his three doubles and scored on an error. The Flying Squirrels tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Frankie Tostado cracked a solo home run to make it 2-2.

The Yard Goats broke the 2-2 tie with five runs in the seventh inning. Tyler Hill and Hunter Stovall started the inning by walking against reliever Taylor Rashi. Isaac Collins reached on a throwing error after his sacrifice bunt which loaded the bases. Ryan Walker came in and struck out Ezequiel Tovar but then surrendered three consecutive hits. Michael Toglia smashed the go-ahead RBI single, scoring Hill, putting Hartford in front 3-2. Brenton Doyle singled home Stovall to make it 4-2, and Aaron Schunk's 2 RBI double gave the Yard Goats a 6-2 lead. Willie MacIver capped the rally with a sac fly and it was 7-2 after seven innings.

Richmond scored a run in the 9th inning and loaded the bases with one out. However, PJ Poulin came in and threw one pitch to get the game ending double play.

The Yard Goats continue their six-game series with the Giants affiliate, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, on Saturday night at 6:05. RHP Noah Davis will start for the Yard Goats and RHP Bryan Brickhouse will start for the Flying Squirrels. The game will be broadcast on Newsradio 1410 WPOP. The Yard Goats return to Dunkin' Donuts Park on Tuesday, May 31st at 7:05 to host the Phillies affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils.
