Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Reading Fightin Phils held the lead for three innings in a tight contest, but they couldn't hold onto it down the stretch. The Binghamton Rumble Ponies scored four runs in the ninth inning and took a 6-4 win on Friday in Baseballtown. James McArthur, the Phillies #20 prospect, threw Reading's best start of the season going six strong without allowing a run.
Kevin Vicuna had two hits in his second game back from the injured list, including a triple. Jonathan Guzman hit a double late in the game and Aldrem Corredor hit a home run to open the scoring.
Friday's contest turned into a pitcher's duel early on as Reading's James McArthur went inning for inning with Binghamton's Jose Chacin.
The R-Phils broke through in the sixth inning. Jack Conley bunted his way to first base with one out. Corredor followed with a two-run shot to left field, which gave the home team a 2-0 lead.
Binghamton cut the lead in half in the top of the seventh inning. Carlos Cortes hit a solo home run to center field.
In the bottom half of the inning, Vicuna hustled for a triple after he hit a ball to the center field wall with one out. The shortstop scored to make it 3-1 when Guzman notched a double.
Once again, the Rumble Ponies answered with a run of their own. Francisco Alvarez crushed a no-doubt home run to center field to pull the visitors within one run again.
Reading took the one-run lead into the top of the ninth inning. R-Phils pitcher Ofreidy Gomez struck out two batters, the second with the bases loaded. Zach Ashford followed the strikeout with a bases-clearing triple to give the Rumble Ponies their first lead of the contest. Binghamton tacked on another run when Ashford scored on a fielding error to lead 6-3.
Down in the bottom of the ninth inning, Vicuna led off with a single to right field. Freylin Minyety walked to put runners on first and second base. Both advanced when Guzman grounded out. Vicuna scored on a sacrifice fly from Ali Castillo, but the scoring stopped there for the Fightins.
McArthur hurled six-scoreless innings in his best start of the season. He allowed four hits and struck out three, walking just one
Matt Seelinger relieved McArthur in the seventh inning. He gave up one run on a home run and struck out two.
Braden Zarbnisky pitched the eighth inning and also gave up one run on a homerun. He finished with three strikeouts.
Gomez took the loss in Friday's contest. He pitched two-thirds of the ninth inning, giving up four runs on one hit and striking out two batters.
Mike Adams relieved Gomez and got the final out of the ninth inning for the Fightins.
The Fightins will play at FirstEnergy Stadium next on Saturday, May 28 at 6:45 PM.
