State College Spikes News Release
AUBURN, NY - A four-run first inning was enough to give the State College Spikes a lead they would not relinquish as they defeated the Auburn Doubledays, 5-3, on Thursday night at Falcon Park.
The victory allowed the Spikes (32-14) to extend their lead in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division to five games over Williamsport, with 30 games remaining on the schedule.
Tommy Edman started the State College charge in the opening frame with a triple off the top of the right-field wall. After a pitch hit Andy Young, Vince Jackson produced his team-leading 29th run batted in with a single to score Edman.
An error then scored another Spikes run, and Jeremy Martinez then added a double to stretch the lead to 3-0 before an out was recorded in the game.
Danny Hudzina then finished off the flurry with an RBI groundout.
Despite an Andres Martinez triple and Blake Perkins groundout putting Auburn (19-27) on the board in the third, the Spikes bumped the lead back to four runs in the sixth when Mick Fennell reached on another Doubledays error and came around to score on Tommy Edman's fielder's choice.
Auburn scored runs on Martinez's RBI single in the seventh and a Sheldon Neuse solo home run in the eighth, but could get no closer.
Bryan Dobzanski (4-4) earned the win after starting and throwing six-plus innings for the Spikes. Dobzanski yielded two runs on four hits and three walks while recording one strikeout for his fifth quality start in nine outings this season.
Spencer Trayner went two innings in relief and gave up one run on two hits. Brady Bowen (5) then recorded a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout for the save.
Doubledays starter Weston Davis (2-3) took the loss after allowing four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits, a walk and a hit batsman over five innings. Davis struck out two batters in the effort.
Friday, the Spikes look to complete a sweep of their three-game set against the Doubledays with a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Falcon Park. Left-hander Dewin Perez (2-2) gets the ball for State College, while Auburn will go with right-hander Luis Reyes (0-0), who spent most of the year at Advanced-A Potomac.
After the series in Auburn, the Spikes will visit the Vermont Lake Monsters for three games before heading home on Tuesday to start a stretch of six straight home games.
