Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- A night after not being able to hold on to leads of three runs in the ninth and two runs in the 11th inning of a 7-6 loss at Lowell, the Lake Monsters took an early 6-0 lead on Thursday before the Spinners battled back with10 unanswered runs in a 10-7 NY-Penn League victory over Vermont at LeLecheur Park.

The loss marked the first time the Lake Monsters have lost after leading by as many six runs in a game since September 4, 2006 at Aberdeen when Vermont led 7-1 in the fifth inning before falling 8-7 to the Ironbirds.

After scoring a run in the first on a double and RBI groundout, the Lake Monsters scored five times in the second starting with a JaVon Shelby leadoff homer. Vermont then put together five straight one-out hits, including a Luis Barrera RBI single and Nate Mondou two-run single to build the 6-0 lead.

Meanwhile 2016 Oakland second-round pick Logan Shore allowed one hit with one walk over the first two innings in his professional debut for Vermont. But starting in the third, the Spinners scored at least one run in each of the next six innings against relievers Ivan Andueza (five runs in 3 2/3 innings) and Derek Beasley (five runs in 2 1/3), while the Lake Monsters had just four singles (three infield hits) over the six innings until Jhonny Rodriguez picked up his second double of the game and scored on a sac fly in the ninth.

Lowell scored one run in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and another in the sixth off Andueza to cut the Lake Monsters lead to 6-5. The Spinners first two runs scored on sac flies, while the third on an Andueza balk before RBI doubles for Carlos Tovar in the fifth and Taylor Hill in the sixth. Beasley struckout Ryan Scott to end the sixth, but loaded the bases on a single, walk, bunt single before an RBI groundout tied the game 6-6.

Matt McLean then gave the Spinners an 8-6 lead with a two-out, two-run double in the seventh and Scott smacked a two-run homer in the eighth to extended the advantage to 10-6. Tovar and Victor Acosta both had three hits for Lowell (27-19), while Hill had two of the Spinners four doubles (Vermont opponents have 16 doubles and seven homers over the last four games).

Red Sox third-round pick Shaun Anderson, who was a teammate of Vermont's Shore and A.J Puk at the University of Florida, struggled in his second start for the Spinners as he allowed six runs on seven hits in just 1 1/3 innings. But three Lowell relievers combined to allow just the ninth-inning run and five hits with seven strikeouts over the final 7 2/3 innings. That included two scoreless innings from Brandon Workman on a rehab assignment and five strikeouts over four innings from Hunter Smith (1-0) in his Lowell debut.

Vermont has lost four straight and 10 of its last 12 overall since they were 17-17 back on July 22nd. The Lake Monsters, who have also lost five straight and nine of their last 10 games on the road, will wrap up the series at Lowell on Friday night before returning home to Centennial Field to begin a three-game series against the State College Spikes Saturday.
