Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, NY - Six walks by Hudson Valley pitchers and untimely hitting did the Renegades in as they lost their second consecutive game to the Brooklyn Cyclones 6-1 Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium. The win clinched the series for the Cyclones and gave Brooklyn a 6-5 lead in the season series. With the loss, the Renegades fell a game behind Staten Island for first-place in the McNamara Division. Hudson Valley has only scored two runs in their last 27 innings.
Brooklyn started the scoring in the first. With one out, second baseman Michael Paez doubled down the leftfield line. Centerfielder Desmond Lindsay followed that by hitting a sharp groundball to shortstop. Bill Pujols dove to his right to make a great play fielding the ball. He got to his feet, but his throw to first was in the dirt. As first baseman Nate Lowe tried to field the low throw, he deflected the ball toward the middle of the infield. That deflection allowed Paez to score from second to give Brooklyn a 1-0 lead.
Things stayed that way until the fifth when the Cyclones took control of the game with three runs. With one out, rightfielder Jacob Zanon doubled then stole third base. He scored when the next hitter, Paez, singled past a drawn in infield to center. After a walk to Lindsay put runners at first and second with one out, a groundout moved the runners to second and third with two away. That's when Hudson Valley starter Brock Burke uncorked a wild pitch to the screen. Paez scored easily from third but when Renegades catcher Danny De La Calle couldn't find the baseball, Lindsay was able to score from second to give Brooklyn a 4-0 lead.
The Renegades tried to make a game of it in the sixth. With one out, leftfielder Garrett Whitley and Lowe singled, before third baseman Jim Haley walked to load the bases. Following a strikeout for out number two, catcher Danny De La Calle swung and missed on strike three, however the ball was in the dirt and got away from Brooklyn catcher Dan Rizzie. De La Calle reached on the wild pitch, the other runners moved up including Whitley scoring from third, and Hudson Valley pulled to within three.
However, reliever Taylor Henry replaced Cyclones starter Merandy Gonzalez and struck out designated hitter Chris Betts with the bases loaded to get Brooklyn out of the inning.
The Cyclones would put the game away with two more runs in the seventh inning. Following a leadoff walk to Lindsay, designated hitter Pete Alonso would double him home to make it 5-1. After a single moved Alonso to third with two out, first baseman Darryl Knight grounded a ball to third, which was thrown away by Jim Haley to give Brooklyn the 6-1 advantage.
Brooklyn had 10 hits for the game including a 3-5 performance from shortstop Colby Woodmansee who doubled twice and singled. Paez went 2-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while Alonso also went 2-5 with an RBI double and a run scored.
Hudson Valley had six hits including two singles apiece from Whitley and Lowe with Whitley scoring the lone run of the game for the Renegades.
Getting the win for Brooklyn was Gonzalez (4-2) who allowed one run on five hits in 5.2 innings. He also walked three and struck out five. The loss went to Renegades starter Brock Burke (1-2) after the left-hander allowed four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings.
The Renegades take on the Cyclones in the finale of their three-game series Friday. First-pitch is slated for 7:05. Hudson Valley will trot out right-hander Noel Rodriguez (1-1, 2.77 ERA) against righty Justin Dunn (1-1, 0.75 ERA) of the Cyclones. Dunn is this year's first round draft pick for the Mets. The game will be followed by a fireworks show. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
