New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Corbin Burnes struck out nine in 6 1/3 scoreless innings and combined with two relievers on a three-hit shutout of the New Orleans Baby Cakes in a 3-0 win for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Thursday night.

The second-rated prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, Burnes gave up back-to-back singles to Magneuris Sierra and Cristhian Adames to put men at the corners with one out in the first inning. But he bounced back to strike out Jonathan Rodriguez and Rafael Ortega, and the Baby Cakes managed just three baserunners the rest of the night.

Burnes (1-0) allowed a third-inning single to Braxton Lee and walked Rodriguez leading off the fourth before inducing an inning-ending double play from Johnny Giavotella.

Nick Ramirez worked 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief, and Erik Davis recorded the final out as New Orleans was shut out for the second time this year.

Baby Cakes starter Joe Gunkel matched Burnes for five innings while limiting the Sky Sox to two hits. The sixth-year pro equaled his career high with nine strikeouts and has allowed one run and six hits in 13 innings over his first three starts.

The Sky Sox broke the ice in the seventh with three consecutive singles to start the inning against reliever Chris Mazza (1-1). Burnes contributed to the cause by slapping a single into center field, and a grounder by Johnny Davis with the bases loaded brought in the first run. Mazza's wild pitch later in the inning extended the lead to 2-0.

Christian Bethancourt homered leading off the eighth provided an insurance tally.

After a 4-1 start, the Baby Cakes have dropped nine of their last 10 games, and have lost eight of their last 10 meetings with Colorado Springs dating back to last season.

The teams conclude the four-game set on Friday at 7 p.m.
