Burlington Bullpen Struggles as Mets Down Royals

Burlington, NC- The Royals' bullpen allowed eight runs on nine hits in four innings, as the Kingsport Mets emerged victorious, 10-3. Matt Murray is tagged with the loss, despite giving up just two runs over his five innings of work, and striking out seven. Miller Diaz earned his first win of the season, in his third start.

In the third innings, Yucary De La Cruz laid down a bunt single to record the first hit. Murray had retired the first eight batters he faced, and had struck out the previous three before the single. Kingsport took the lead when the next batter, Juan Gamboa, hit his first home run of the year, to make it 2-0.

Burlington would cut the lead in half in the fifth inning when Lane Adams was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. That was the only run the Royals could put together with the opportunity. In the top half of the next inning, Andy Ferguson would take the mound, and struggle. The former Arkansas State Wolverine coughed up four runs on two hits, and walked three, allowing the Mets to send 10 batters to the plate.

In the bottom of the seventh, Burlington would narrow the gap. Lane Adams hit a ball of the fence in right-center, scoring Adrian Bringas, who was on with his third hit of the night. Justin Trapp would groundout to score Anthony Howard to make it s five run deficit.

In the Last two innings, Kingsport would get to Abel Gonzales, as he surrendered four runs, on two separate two run homers. Luke Stewart and Dylan Brown each took Gonzales out of the park, with Brown's shot out by a long way. The Royals will look to avoid the sweep Monday, at 11:00 AM.

Gamboa and Gregory Pron each had two hits with two runs batted in, while Jonathan Clark went 2-for-4. Brown's home run came the inning after he entered to pinch run for Julio Concepcion, who finished 1-for-4. Jeffery Glenn struggled at the plate, striking out twice in a 0-for-4 outing.

Burlington was led by Bringas who finished with a game-high three hits, and through seven innings, had over half of his team's hits. Adams' double was his only hit of the night, and he finished with two RBI.

On the hill, Diaz went five innings, allowing one run on two hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. Brian Valenzuela threw three and a third innings, giving up two runs on four hits. In the bottom of the ninth, Chad Sheppard gave up a hit while recording the final two outs.

Murray gave up three hits and two runs, but falls to 2-3. In relief, Ferguson gave up four runs on two hits with two walks, and recorded strikeouts for the two outs he received. The final inning and a third belonged to Gonzales, who surrendered seven hits and four runs.
