Bundu, Norkus named to Team of the Week
July 14, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
North Carolina FC News Release
Forward Sallieu Bundu and defender Caleb Norkus were named to the USL-1 Team of the Week for Week 14, the USL-1 announced Tuesday.
Bundu and Norkus were vital in leading the RailHawks to a 1-0 win on Saturday in Charleston, as Carolina became the first USL-1 team to defeat the Battery on their home field this season.
"They both deserved it from their performances on Saturday," said Carolina coach Martin Rennie. "Sallieu's back and really fit, and when he's fit he's dangerous. He scored a good goal and created a few chances Saturday. Caleb seems to always be ready to perform when he's called upon, and he did really well over the weekend. He's now in contention for the next game."
This week marks the first time this season either player has been selected to a Team of the Week, and they represent the 11th and 12th different RailHawks to earn such an honor in 2009. It is also the sixth time this year that multiple RailHawks have been named to the same Team of the Week.
Bundu scored the game-winning goal in the 26th minute Saturday. The goal came shortly after Charleston's Randi Patterson was red carded. Carolina midfielder Daniel Paladini led a counter attack, and he played a ball down the left flank to Josh Gardner. After a few touches toward the endline, Gardner sent in a low cross and Bundu was there to redirect it past Charleston goalkeeper Dusty Hudock. It was Bundu's second goal of the season and first since April 18.
Norkus played 90 minutes at right back Saturday and helped the RailHawks earn their ninth shutout of the season and first since June 11.
The RailHawks (8-4-3) begin the second half of their season on Friday against the Vancouver Whitecaps. The match begins at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel. The RailHawks will also play Estudiantes Tecos, of the Mexican First Division, on Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park at 7 p.m.
