Bums Strike Down 'Bolts

CRESTWOOD, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums'(12-25) offense exploded for thirteen hits as they upended the Windy City Thunderbolts(22-15), by the final score of 9-2.

Marcos Derkes led off the game by reaching on a walk. Casey Rodrigue then followed by reaching on a fielder's choice and Jose Vargas walked. With Steven Patterson at the plate, Rodrigue scored from second on a wild pitch that eluded the catcher and rolled to the backstop. Patterson completed his plate appearance by walking, and Giancarlo Brugnoni loaded the bases on yet another walk. Ryan Bottger was the fourth walk issued in a row, scoring Vargas, giving the Bums a 2-0 lead.

Windy City got on the board in the second inning when Cody Keefer scored on an RBI groundout by Taylor Smart after Keefer got on base with a triple. With one out in the third, Brugnoni slammed a solo home run over the left-center field wall for his second of the season, giving the Bums another two run lead. With two outs in the fourth, Derkes hit his first triple of the season, then came in to score on a Rodrigue RBI single, making it 4-1.

It was another two out rally for the Bums in the sixth starting off with an infield hit by Rodrigue. Jose Vargas came up and blasted a two-run homer way over the left field wall for his fourth of the season. Patterson and Brugnoni followed with consecutive walks, and Ryan Bottger rocked a double to center, scoring both Patterson and Brugnoni, and the Bums had a seven run lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Ransom LaLonde was hit by a pitch. He moved to third on a Cody Keefer single then scored on a throwing error. After a scoreless seventh, Patterson walked again to start off the inning. Brugnoni then hit an RBI double to center, scoring Patterson, and it was 9-2.

Dylan Stoops got the start and the win for the Beach Bums, improving to 4-1. He went six strong innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits, and struck out seven. Tyler Murphy gets the loss for Windy City to drop to 2-1. He gave up four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of work, walking five. In fact, Windy City pitchers were responsible for walking eleven Beach Bums hitters.

The Beach Bums and Windy City Thunderbolts continue this weekend's four game series, tomorrow afternoon in Illinois. Newcomer Austin Bembnowski gets the start for the Beach Bums while Mitchell Cody gets the call for Windy City. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 2:45pm, on 101.9- The Bay.

Don't Forget- Coming up on Friday, July 1st, we will have another FANtastic Fireworks show following the final pitch of the game against the Southern Illinois Miners. First pitch will be at 7:05pm and the gates open at 5pm.

The Beach Bums business offices are open from 9am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Sponsorships, season tickets, group packages, patio tables, and suite, are all currently available for the 2016 season. The Box Office & Gift Ship are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays. Stadium hours are extended on gamedays.
