Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums(15-28) were unable to overcome a three run deficit, falling to the Southern Illinois Miners(30-12), 4-1.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first three innings in spite of each getting men on base. With two away in the top of the fourth, Alex De Leon grounded to third. The throw across the diamond by Casey Rodrigue pulled Elijah Trail off the base but he hustled to get back on. Unfortunately for the Beach Bums, the umpire ruled him to be late and De Leon was safe, extending the inning. After Nolan Earley singled, Steve Marino hit a double to center, scoring both runners, giving the Miners a 2-0 lead.

The Bums worked to cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Bottger and Christian Santisteban each hit one out single to start the threat. After Trail walked to load the bases, Gaby Juarbe grounded to third, plating Bottger and getting Traverse City on the board.

Craig Massey led off the top of the sixth by singling to center. He waited for two outs then stole second. Marino followed with an RBI single to drive him home. After the throw to the plate, Marino was able to move into scoring position. Vin Guglietti took advantage with an RBI single of his own to make it 4-1. The Beach Bums struggled to respond as Miner pitchers combined to, at one point, retire twelve batters in a row.

Dyllon Nuernberg got the win, going seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks, while fanning six. He improves to 3-1. Dylan Stoops had another quality start as well, giving up just two earned runs on seven hits and a walk. He struck out three but gets stuck with the loss to drop to 4-2. Chris DeBoo retired the last two Bums batters for his second save of the year.
