Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners rode strong starting pitching from Dyllon Nuernberg and three RBIs from captain Steve Marino to a 4-1 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums on Friday night at Wuerfel Park in Traverse City, winning their tenth straight game and 21st in their last 24 overall to improve their record on the season to 30-12. It is their first win streak of 10 games or more since a league-record 20-game win streak in 2010.

Niether team scored in the first three innings as Nuernberg (3-1) and Traverse City starter Dylan Stoops (4-2) held the other off the scoreboard in matching each other pitch-for-pitch. In the top of the fourth, with two outs, the game turned when Alex De Leon hit a grounder to third baseman Casey Rodrigue that he threw wide to first for an error. After that, Nolan Earley singled and then Marino came up and smacked a double to left-center field, plating both runners and giving Southern Illinois a 2-0 lead.

Traverse City would load the bases in the bottom of the inning on two hits and a walk, but after an RBI fielder's choice by Gaby Juarbe made the score 2-1, Nuernberg got Jeff DeBlieux to ground out to first to preserve the lead. It would be the first in a stretch of ten straight batters Nuernberg would retire to conclude his outing, as the right-hander pitched seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

The Miners would add more insurance with two outs in the sixth inning on RBI singles by Marino and Vin Guglietti for the final 4-1 margin, with the bullpen of Brooks Trujillo and Chris DeBoo, who picked up his second save, holding the Beach Bums off the board the rest of the way. Marino finished with a pair of hits and three RBIs, while Guglietti went 3-for-4 with an RBI as Southern Illinois kept on the winning track to being the month of July.

The Miners will go for an 11th consecutive win and a series victory in Traverse City on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Rick Teasley will start on the mound opposed by Traverse City's Austin Bembnowski.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
