Bums Comeback Stalls vs. Schaumburg

Traverse City Beach Bums News Release


SCHAUMBURG, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums(9-19), for the second straight night, fell behind early, falling to the Schaumburg Boomers(15-14), 9-5.

The Beach Bums got the offense started in the top of the first inning, when with one out, Casey Rodrigue walked. Jose Vargas followed with a single, moving Rodrigue to third. Will Kengor then hit a hard grounder to first, scoring Rodrigue and giving Traverse City a 1-0 lead.

Schaumburg responded by bringing eleven men to the plate in the bottom of the inning. Dusty Robinson tied the game with an RBI single. Two batters later, Paul Kronenfeld hit a two-run double, giving the Boomers a 3-1 lead. Chris Robinson came up next and hit a two-run home run over the right-center field wall. After James Keller singled and Justin Byrd was hit by a pitch, Josh Gardiner hit a 3-run blast off of the left field foul pole, to make it 8-1 after one.

The game stayed that way until the seventh inning when Gaby Juarbe led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a fly out, and Jeff DeBlieux hit an RBI sacrifice fly, getting the Bums on the board again. In the top of the 8th, Will Kengor hit a deep fly ball to centerfield, and it carried over the wall for a solo homer, his 3rd of the season. Steven Patterson, Brandon Thomasson, and Juarbe, each hit singled to load the bases with one out, but they couldn't score any further in the inning.

Shawn Payne led off the bottom of the eighth for Schaumburg with a solo home run to extend the Boomers lead to 9-3. Ryan Bottger led off the top of the ninth with a double, then Rodrigue drove him home with a single to left. After a double play put the Bums on the brink, Kengor hit another rocket to center, for his second long ball of the game.

Kagen Hopkins, spotted with the large lead after the first inning, earned the win to improve to 2-1. Dylan Stoops lasted only one inning, giving up eight runs and seven hits, suffered the loss, dropping to 1-2. Lost in the offense was the performance of the Beach Bums' bullpen. Benjamin Libuda, James Ball, Joeanthony Rivera, and Andrew Brockett, combined for seven innings of work, allowing one run on two hits, in an effort to keep them in the game.

The Beach Bums and Schaumburg Boomers finish this three game series with a matinee matchup. Michael Shreves takes the mound of the Bums and Schaumburg will go with Josh Heddinger. First pitch is scheduled for 12pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 11:40am, on 101.9- The Bay.

Coming up on Tuesday, June 21st, it will be another Two for Tuesday event as the Beach Bums host the Washington Wild Things. The Traverse City Beach Bums are working in conjunction with the Alzheimers Association of Traverse City to try and paint the park in purple in order to help bring awareness to Alzheimers. Bring the whole family and sign up for the Walk to End Alzheimers, help spread awareness, and show your support for those affected by this mental illness

The Beach Bums business offices are open from 9am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Sponsorships, season tickets, group packages, patio tables, and suite, are all currently available for the 2016 season. The Box Office & Gift Ship are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays. Stadium hours are extended on gamedays.
