
Bums Come Back But Fall in Tenth

SCHAUMBURG, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums(4-5), down 2-0 in the ninth, forced extra innings, but lost in the tenth to the Schaumburg Boomers(3-6), by a final score of 3-2.
After four scoreless innings, Schaumburg finally broke through in the fifth when Dylan Jones hit an RBI single to give the Boomers a 1-0 lead. With one out in the seventh, Kenny Towns blasted a solo homer over the left field wall, his first of the season, doubling the Schaumburg advantage.
Will Kengor led off the top of the ninth inning with a single to right then Luke Lowery walked, putting the tying run on base, Kengor and Lowery then pulled off a double steal to put runners at second and third, with nobody out. With Stevn Lohr at the plate, Kengor was able to score on a wild pitch, moving Lowery to third. Lohr then tied the game with an RBI single to right. In the tenth, Sean Godfrey hit an RBI single to win the game.
Both starters had no-decisions but were quite good, going deep into the game. Joe Hauser twice retired eight Beach Bums in a row while Adam Cornwell didn't allow a hit until the fifth, getting the first 10 he faced. Schaumburg's Mitch Schulewitz earned the win in relief, giving up a walk, and striking out one in the tenth. Although he had a solid appearance, Sam Burton is saddled with the loss after going 2 and 2/3 innings, giving up a win on two hits and striking out two.
Today's loss finishes the season-opening nine game road trip with the Beach Bums going 4-5 and taking two of three series'. On Wednesday evening, the Beach Bums finally return to Wuerfel Park to open the home portion of their schedule as they take on the Florence Freedom in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 5:05pm. They will play two seven-inning contests with a 30 minute break between games. Opening night is Wednesday, May 23rd, and you'll get double the bang for your buck with a doubleheader against the Florence Freedom.
