Durham Bulls News Release
(Fort Mill, SC) Fernando Perez's single gave Durham its only lead in the fourth, but Charlotte stormed back for an 8-4 win on Sunday to take three of four in the series.
Perez singled with two out to left-center, scoring Chris Richard, who had walked. The base hit, one of three for Perez, gave Durham a 4-3 advantage. Durham had trailed 3-0 in the first, but got a second-inning homer from Richard, and then a two-run shot from Dan Johnson to tie the game in the fourth before Perez's base hit. Johnson now has a league-best 25 homers and 82 RBI.
Charlotte (50-46) answered in the next half inning when Buck Coats came up with a two-out single off Carlos Hernandez, scoring Donny Lucy from third.
After Durham couldn't take advantage of a two-on none-out situation in the sixth, Charlotte answered in the bottom of the frame. Fernando Cortez singled to center, was sacrificed to second, and came home on Jeremy Reed's double to left off Brian Baker (7-1).
The Knights added three more runs in the seventh against Aneury Rodriguez, all with two out. Cortez delivered a two-run triple to right, and scored on a Donny Lucy bloop hit to left. Cortez, a former Bull in 2005 and 2006, had eight hits in the last three games of the series. Charlotte had 13 two-out runs in the four-game set.
Durham (56-38) did collect 10 hits, including three by Perez, but went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, and 5-for-33 in the series.
The Bulls return home on Monday to begin play against Columbus, which has the best record in the league. Jeremy Hellickson will start for Durham. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 6:50, with first pitch at 7:05.
