Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - A ninth-inning rally fell short on Opening Night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park as the Bulls dropped the first game of four to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, 7-3. The Yankees homered three times off Bulls pitching before a crowd of 10,777. Bulls third baseman Evan Longoria was pulled from the starting lineup 40 minutes prior to gametime as he left for Tampa Bay. Longoria will be selected to Tampa and placed on the 40-man roster tomorrow.

North Carolina-native Chris Mason started for the Bulls and held the Yankees to two runs, retiring eight in a row before two walks set up a three-run home run by Cody Ransom in the sixth. The Yankees scored two more off Brian Henderson, and Dale Thayer pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

The Bulls' offense awoke in the ninth, with Jon Weber hitting a two-out, two-run home run in the final frame, but could not even the score. Weber went 3-for-4 on the night, with three runs batted in and a stolen base. Chirs Richard was 2-for-4 with a run scored on the evening.

Longoria will be selected to Tampa Bay's roster before tomorrow's game against Baltimore, replacing the injured Willy Aybar. Lefty Mike Prochaska will be assigned to Durham from Hudson Valley.

Durham and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre meet again Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park at 5:05 p.m. Prochaska (1-0, 1.80 ERA) is expected to start for the Bulls, while the Yankees counter with right-hander Jeff Marquez (0-1, 18.00 ERA).
