Bulls Fall to Ice Dogs 5-2
September 18, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release
BLAINE, MN - A bad first 20 minutes doomed the Amarillo Bulls on Thursday here in their second game of the North American Hockey League Showcase.
The Bulls surrendered three first period goals, including two via the power play, and dropped a 5-2 decision to the Fairbank Ice dogs in a match-up that featured the past two Robertson Cup National Champions.
Elijah Barriga and Cody Gylling netted goals for Amarillo in the contest while Joakim Jutras recorded the loss in net.
The opening 20 minutes saw a fired up Ice Dogs team take it to the Bulls and score two goals just over three minutes apart. Penalty trouble hurt the Bulls as they were forced to spend extra time penalty killing and were not able to mount much of an offensive attack. Fairbanks added a third goal in the final five minutes of the stanza on the power play.
The Bulls came out much stronger in the second period and were able to break through on the scoreboard. Elijah Barriga scored on a great pass from Ruslan Rakhmatov. Kasper Emanuelsson also provided an assist on the play. Mitchell McPherson, Thomas Fazio and JJ Huerena also had great scoring opportunities but were turned away by Patrick Munson. The Ice Dogs couldn't generate much offense and in fact didn't record a shot on goal.
In the third the Bulls kept pressing, but it was Fairbanks that would score a key insurance goal to extend the lead to 4-1. Amarillo wasn't done yet, and closed the deficit to 4-2 on a great goal by Cody Gylling from Charles Combs and Mike Damien.
The Bulls pulled their goaltender in the final minute looking for the equalizer, but Fairbanks quickly worked the puck up the ice and scored into an empty net.
The Fairbanks Ice Dogs outshot the Amarillo Bulls 42-22 including 24-8 in the third period. The Bulls had just one power play chance in the game, while the Ice Dogs were 2 for 6.
Box Score - Fairbanks 5 - Amarillo 2
