Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC -On a beautiful Friday evening highlighted by a post-game fireworks show, the Durham Bulls and Pawtucket Red Sox managed to give the 10,361 fans at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park a few fireworks of their own during a 13-9 Red Sox victory over the Bulls. Pawtucket improves to 23-24 on the season while Durham falls to 22-27.

The 13-9 Red Sox victory was highlighted by two six-run innings as Pawtucket defeated the home team in front of a sellout crowd. Trailing 3-1 entering the second inning, the Red Sox managed to put up six runs in the frame to take a 7-3 lead. Pawtucket DH Justin Sherrod scored the first run of the inning on an Adam Stern sacrifice fly. Dave Berg drove in Alejandro Machado on the next at-bat with a single to left. With two runners on base and one out, left fielder George Lombard hit a ground ball to short that was misplayed by Bulls shortstop B.J. Upton, allowing Lombard to reach base and load the bases. Roberto Petagine then drew a walk from Bulls starter John Webb that allowed Jim Buckley to cross the plate to put Pawtucket ahead, 4-3. Webb later walked shortstop Tim Hummel with the bases loaded, allowing Berg to score to make it a 5-3 deficit. Sherrod capped the six-run inning with a two-run double to left field to give the Red Sox a 7-3 advantage.

In the top of the fifth inning, Pawtucket managed to put another six runs on the scoreboard aided by three Bulls errors. Sherrod led off the inning with a double followed by a single by Machado to put runners on first and third. Back-to-back doubles by Buckley and Stern plated the first three runs and ended Bulls reliever Jim Magrane's night. The defense came apart when Matt Carnes took the hill as back-to-back errors by B. J. Upton and Eric Munson allowed Stern to score, then a throwing error later in the inning by Paul Hoover let another two runs in for the Red Sox.

The Bulls offense was hung tough with nine runs and eleven hits, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Red Sox. Jonny Gomes and Joey Gathright had three hits apiece; Gomes contributing a double and his team-leading 11th home run in the contest. Kevin Cash and Earl Snyder also hit homers for the Bulls in the loss.

LHP Abe Alvarez (4-2) picked up the win for the Red Sox pitching five innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while striking out six. RHP John Webb (3-3) who pitched eight innings apiece in each of his last two starts, lasted only one and two-thirds innings allowing seven runs (three earned) on six hits. The Bulls defense committed five errors leading to seven unearned runs.

The Bulls and Pawtucket meet again on Saturday night at 7:00 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com or by phone at (919) 956-BULL.
