Durham Bulls News Release
(Norfolk, VA) Chris Richard hit his first homer of the season, but it wasn't enough to overcome Norfolk's 14-hit attack in a 12-3 loss on Saturday night.
The Bulls had runners in scoring position in the first three innings, but failed to cash in against starter Alfredo Simon. Meanwhile Jeff Bennett retired his first eight Norfolk batters before walking number nine hitter Steve Lerud after getting ahead in the count 0-2. Four straight ground singles followed, the last three driving home runs for a 3-0 lead. Two more line drive base hits followed, and Bennett (0-1) and the Bulls were down 5-0.
Richard then homered off Chris George (1-0) with out in the fourth to Durham on the board. A sac fly by Rashad Eldridge in the fifth got Durham within 5-2. The Bulls would stay close until the seventh, when Norfolk scored a pair of two-out runs to lead 8-3, and then tacked on four more in the eighth. Norfolk scored seven of its first eight runs with two out.
Durham (1-2) collected seven hits, two each by Richard, John Jaso and Fernando Perez. The Bulls will seek a split of the four-game series on Sunday at 1:15 as righty Virgil Vasquez takes the hill against lefty Troy Patton. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 1 p.m.
