
Bullpen Blows It For Calgary

Calgary Vipers News Release
Up one run with two innings to play the Calgary Vipers gave up two late tallies in being defeated 4-3 by the Edmonton Capitals at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Leading 4-1 Calgary surrendered two runs in the sixth inning followed by giving up the tying run in the eighth and winning tally in the ninth frame. With the loss the Vipers four game winning streak comes to an end and fall to 21-8 on the second half for a five and a half game lead in the North Division. Overall the Snakes are now 44-28 on the Golden Baseball League season.
The loss spoiled an excellent start by Mark Michael who threw six innings giving up two earned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out seven. The right hander faced 25 batters and threw an outstanding 22 first pitch strikes while in total tossing 59 strikes compared to 26 balls. Out of the bullpen Monte Mansfield threw a scoreless seventh inning without giving up a hit. Jordan Muir (2-1) received the loss after giving up a double and single in the ninth inning with two outs.
At the plate Brent Metheny led the way with a home run and both two runs batted in and scored.
Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning as Guillermo Reyes singled, Metheny doubled, Julio Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly, and Metheny scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 advantage.
Edmonton cut the lead in half to 2-1 in the fifth frame when Kevin House singled to centerfield where the ball got away from Ramirez and House came around to score on a three-base fielding error.
The Vipers stretched their lead to 4-1 in the sixth as Michael recorded his first professional hit and with two outs Metheny launched a two-run shot for his 11th home run of the season.
The Capitals quickly responded in the bottom of the inning when Tom Collaro singled and Larry Bigbie lined a two-run homer for a 4-3 score.
In the eighth frame Edmonton tied the game at 4-4 as Enrique Cruz walked, Collaro singled, and Bigbie collected a run batted in base hit.
An inning later the Capitals completed the comeback when with two outs Ryan Stevenson blooped a doubled down the left field line and Cruz plated the winning run with a single for a 5-4 final.
This six-game series in Edmonton against the Capitals continues on Friday August 20th and Saturday August 21st at 7:00 PM MDT, a double-header Sunday August 22nd at 2:00 PM MDT, and Monday August 23rd at 7:00 PM MDT.
The Snakes return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday August 26th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Victoria Seals for Chick Wagon Night, Friday August 27th at 7:05 PM MDT for Small Town Spirit Night, Saturday August 28th at 5:05 PM MDT for Winnipeg Night, and Sunday August 29th at 1:35 PM MDT for Fan Appreciation Day.
