Chico Outlaws News Release

The Outlaws opened up the final homestand of the year and ended up on the losing end of a 3-0 shutout at the hands of the Maui Na Koa Ikaika on Thursday night at Nettleton Stadium. The game was the first meeting of the year between the two teams.

With the team from the 50th State riding an eight-game win streak and the Outlaws trying to snap a seven-game losing skid at home, the matchup between the two GBL playoff teams had a post-season feel to it before the first pitch.

Maui's Gregorio Martinez (3-5) was brilliant, going eight innings and throwing a four-hitter while striking out four Outlaws in earning the win. Demetrius Banks (8-3) took the loss, lasting into the sixth before coming out of the game trailing 3-0.

Na Koa Ikaika first baseman Chester Wilson, a former Southern Utah product and Honolulu native, provided Maui all the runs they would need with his two-run jack out of the Nett in the second inning, putting the Strong Warriors in front 2-0. The homer was Wilson's first as a pro.

Travon Jackson hit his first homerun of the year in the fourth off Banks, giving Na Koa Ikaika a three run cushion. That would be all the run support Martinez needed to get his third win of the year.

Former Toronto Blue Jay Jamie Vermiliyea earned his 17th save of the year in pitching the ninth inning. Vermilyea got into trouble after allowing base hits by Mark Samuelson and Robby Alcombrack, but induced a 4-6-3 double play ball to end the game.

David Dinelli pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief for Chico, while Rusty Jones went two scoreless innings to finish the game for the Outlaws, who drop to 14-14 in the second half with the loss. Chico has now lost eight consecutive games at home dating back to July 17th against Victoria.

Maui improves to 18-4 in the second half.
