August 19, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release
The Orange County Flyers tied a franchise record, dealing 17 strikeouts to the Yuma Scorpions in a 8-0 win on Thursday night at Goodwin Field. The Flyers have now won nine straight games and 18 of their last 20, improving to 20-5 in the second half (42-28 overall).
Starting pitcher Manny Ayala struck out a career-high 12 batters over seven scoreless inning of work. Ayala (11-0) allowed only four hits and walked one batter for the win before differing to Mark Prior, who came on to pitch the eighth inning in relief.
Prior, a former NL All-Star with the Chicago Cubs in 2003, struck out the side in the eighth inning, despite allowing a single and a walk. Prior has now struck out 13 batters in six innings as a Flyer. Andre Simpson fanned two batters in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to bring Orange County to 17 team strikeouts on the night.
Rookie Tyler Keeble finished a triple shy of the cycle to lead the offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored. Keeble blasted a solo homerun in the bottom of the third, and Sergio Pedroza added a déj=E0 vu solo homerun two batters later, the second time this season the Flyers have gone deep twice in one inning.
With Orange County on top 2-0, Keeble singled to lead off the fifth inning, stole second base and eventually scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 3-0.
The Flyers added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Steve Boggs led off the inning with a single, and Keeble reached on an error. Two batters later, Sergio Pedroza was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Keith Ginter knocked a sac-fly to center field to cash Boggs. David Harris followed with a line drive off the right field wall for a two-run double and a 6-0 Flyers lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, OC piled on as Keeble and Jimmy Rohan added back-to-back RBI-doubles. Rohan brought his league-leading hit total to 109 on the season, three shy of the Flyers franchise record.
The Orange County Flyers continue this three-game series against the Scorpions on Friday as Jesse Smith takes the mound for the 6:05pm first pitch. Friday the Flyers are giving away bobbleheads of KFI host John Kobylt as well as Flyers dry-fit t-shirts to the first 500 fans. KFI's "John & Ken Show" will be live on remote at Goodwin Field starting at 2pm on Friday. For ticket information, please call the team office at (714) 526-8326 or visit www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
