Lancaster Stormers News Release

Lancaster used five relievers in a seven-inning afternoon game to shut out the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on two hits as the Barnstormers took a 2-0 decision at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

It was the Barnstormers 84th win of the season. Lancaster needs three more in the remaining eight games to set a new Atlantic League record for victories in a season. Meanwhile, the Barnstormers maintained a two-game lead over the York Revolution heading into Saturday evening's action.

Joe Bateman, making the spot start, pitched three no-hit innings. Ross Peeples took over in the fourth and allowed singles to Mike Daniel and Casey Benjamin around a strikeout before giving way to Beau Vaughan. The right-hander induced a pop up to second out of designated hitter Jesse Gutierrez and struck out Cesar Nicolas to get the Barnstormers out of the only jam they faced all afternoon.

Vaughan (5-0) erased a leadoff error in the fifth with a 1-6-3 double play and was awarded the victory.

Jeff Bennett pitched a perfect sixth inning, and Tim Hamulack retired the side in order in the seventh to earn his 32nd save of the season and 25th in a row.

Gilberto Mejia provided all the offense the Barnstormers needed. The second baseman led off the afternoon with a deep fly to right off Daryl Thompson (1-2) on the sunny, windy afternoon. While the wind kept the ball in the park, the sun blinded right fielder Mike Daniels, and the ball fell in for a triple. Mejia scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Adam Godwin.

Lancaster did not score again until the sixth. Mejia, who had all three Barnstormers hits, flared a single into right and advanced to second on a bunt by Godwin. Blake Gailen was intentionally walked to bring up Tommy Everidge. The runners were put into motion on a 3-2 pitch. Everidge went down swinging, and catcher Christian Lopez fired to third. Mejia beat the throw but overslid the bag. Third baseman Matt Padgett went to apply the tag and missed. Mejia bolted for the plate, and Padgett momentarily lost his grip trying to make a throw. The bobble gave Mejia enough time to get home safely as the Barnstormers took their final 2-0 lead.

The two clubs reconvene this evening for a nine-inning game with fireworks to follow. J.D. Durbin (13-9) will take the hill for Lancaster against right-hander Matthew Vasquez (9-8). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: It was the eighth shutout thrown by the Lancaster staff this season...Hamulack's save was his 50th in a Barnstormers uniform, making him sixth all-time in the Atlantic League...Thompson became only the second opposing pitcher to strike out 10 in a game this season as he got 10 of the 18 outs on strikes...The two hits by Southern Maryland marked a season low by opponents while the three by Lancaster tied a season low.
