
Bridgeport Swept in Doubleheader

(Bridgeport, Conn. - Sept. 15, 2012) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (31-31, 62-70) were swept in a doubleheader as the Bluefish were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (33-30, 62-71) by a score of 6-5 in the first contest and 1-0 in the finale at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Saturday. Bridgeport is 8-11 against Sugar Land this season and trails the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs by three games in the Second Half Liberty Division standings.
Bridgeport had a strong performance from Brad Thompson (5-5) in the finale; but the righthanded starter suffered the complete game loss. The righthander allowed an RBI single to Dionys Cesar in the sixth frame. It was Thompson's third complete game in ten starts as he gave up three hits and fanned one in his outing.
Will Startup started for the road team and threw three scoreless frames but did not qualify for the victory. The starter gave up one hit and two walks while striking out two. Two relievers combined for the final four scoreless frames including Pedro Liriano (8-3) who picked up the victory and Jeff Farnsworth notched his third save. The tandem allowed one hit and two walks while striking out five.
In the first game, the Bluefish took an early lead on an RBI single to right by Willis Otanez. The designated hitter reached base three times and scored once in the opener. Eddie Rogers contributed three hits, got on base four times, and came to the plate three times in the early matchup. Prentice Redman served a two-run bloop double in the eighth and picked up two hits. Luis Lopez smacked an RBI double and James Simmons drove in the other run.
After the Bluefish scored the first run, Sugar Land pushed across five unanswered including four in the fifth. Aaron Bates earned a two-run single. Matt Hagen followed with his second hit of the game; an RBI double. Bubba Bell brought in the other runner on a grounder. The final Skeeters run came on a solo drive to right by Cesar who had two hits.
Bridgeport starter, Gilbert De La Vara (11-9), suffered the loss as the southpaw completed five innings of five run, eight hit, four walk, and three strikeouts. Sugar Land hurler, Scott Kazmir (3-6), earned the victory as the southpaw allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning four. Gary Majewski notched his twenty-third save of the year in giving up one hit in one-and-a-third frames.
Bridgeport finishes a four game series against the Sugar Land Skeeters on Sunday. First pitch is at 2:05 with the gates opening one hour before first pitch. It is an All in Family Fun Sunday with an autograph session before the game and Kids Run the Bases at the end of the contest. Bridgeport will send righthander Jonah Bayliss (4-8, 5.34 ERA) to the hill against Sugar Land righthanded starter Michael Nix (4-10, 5.31 ERA).
