ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - The Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies of the ECHL, a proud affiliate of the New York Islanders, have announced that the team will honor Evan Newman and dedicate the 2004-05 season in his memory by wearing insignia's with the name "EVAN" inscribed on the back of both their home and away helmets for the remainder of the year.
Evan was a participaint in the organization's "Face-Off Against Kids Cancer" program for the past two years, though he was unable to attend any of the events this season due to his reoccuring illness related to cancer. Evan passed away on February 3. He was just 12-years old.
"On behalf of the Boardwalk Bullies organization, I offer my condolences to the Newman family in the time of their loss," said Bullies Vice President and General Manager Dan Belisle. "The 'Face-Off Against Kids Cancer' is such a terrific program, but we still cannot escape the harsh realities that these children are battling for their lives on a daily basis. By inscribing Evan's name on the back of our helmets, we will keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers every single day."
In its second season through the generousity of many fans and supporters, the "Face-Off Against Kids Cancer" raised over $12,000. Proceeds will benefit Caps For Kids, a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing hats signed by athletes and entertainers to kids who lose their hair due to chemotherapy treatments of cancer, Alfred I. duPont Hospital For Children in Wilmington, Delaware, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in an effort to one day find a cure for cancer.
