Pride Hold Off Sea Wolves 5-4

FLORENCE, S.C. – Eric Naud and Gregg Johnson tallied two goals each to lead the Pee Dee Pride past the Mississippi Sea Wolves 5-4 at the Florence Civic Center.

"We fell asleep in the second period and it cost us," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "You have to compete and be willing to pay the price. Hopefully we learn that lesson tonight. By dropping this game, we've made it hard on ourselves going into Charlotte the next two."

Mississippi (24-17-4, 52 points) hit stride at the 2:40 mark. John Evangelista deposited his own rebound in front of goaltender Sebastien Laplante to tally his fifth goal of the year. Pat O'Leary and Lucas Drake were awarded assists.

Pee Dee (24-22-3, 51 points) got back on even terms at 11:10. Steve Cygan fed a pass to the left circle for Kyle Kidney, who put the puck into the net beating Matt Underhill, who was appearing in his 100th professional game. Kidney's 11th of the season was also set up by Naud.

The Pride took their first lead of the game on combination by a couple veterans. Allan Sirois got the puck to Naud, who backhanded a shot in for his fourth of the campaign. Kidney also registered a helper making it 2-1 for Pee Dee.

Late in the first period on a delayed penalty against Pee Dee, Mississippi took advantage. Underhill went to the bench to give the Sea Wolves an extra attacker allowing Louis Dumont to bury his 14th marker of the year from the low left circle. Jay Legault and Anthony Battaglia garnered assists.

Pee Dee pulled away in the second. Naud notched his second of the night on a quick turnaround shot from the slot set up by Cygan and Kidney at the 2:58 mark.

The Pride took a two-goal lead on a on a scramble in front of the Sea Wolves net at 6:58. Johnson was credited with his 11th tally of the season to make it 4-2 for Pee Dee. Sirois and Ben Knopp picked up assists.

Johnson went back to work at 15:01 and unleashed a wicked wrist shot from the slot to net his second of the game and 12th of the season giving the Pride a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes of action. Mark Mullen and Darryl Green had the helpers.

The Sea Wolves closed the gap to two at 2:46 of the third. Austin Miller let go with a point shot re-directed by Battaglia, who tied the team-lead with his 18th goal of the campaign. The secondary assist went to Dumont, which was his 500th professional assist.

In the final minute, Mississippi pulled its goaltender and with the net empty Mike Jarmuth ripped a shot from the blueline tipped by Legault for his ninth of the campaign at 19:35, but it wouldn't be enough. Battaglia also collected a helper.

Mississippi went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Pee Dee failed to convert on two chances with the man advantage. Pride outshot the Sea Wolves 39-38.
