July 2, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis.- With the game-tying run on third, the Green Bay Bullfrogs (22-14) dropped the first game of two by a score of 4-3 to the La Crosse Loggers (20-15) to commence the second half of play.
For the third straight time in the road set (seven combined runs), the Bullfrogs scored in the first inning, this time plating two runs. Logan Taylor (Louisville) lashed a double off of La Crosse starter, Brandon Lawson (South Florida), and was plated by a Robb Paller (Columbia) RBI single.
Another run scored in the first inning as Matt De La Rosa (Lenoir-Rhyne) struck a ball that was directed wide off the glove of Ron Gideon (Texas A&M) at first as Green Bay took a 2-0 first inning lead.
The response came with three runs from La Crosse against Bullfrogs' starter Luke VanLanen (Valparaiso). The Loggers tallied four hits in the inning including RBI base knocks from Jordan Pearce (Nevada) and Keith Skinner (North Florida).
The score after two innings would remain a 3-2 Loggers advantage until the eighth inning. In between, Luke Syens put up five innings of scoreless relief on just five hits allowed with four strikeouts. He was matched by a thorough seven innings and two run baseball by Lawson, his longest outing this summer.
The Bullfrogs outfielders also threw out two runners at home plate. In the third, Will Savage was gunned down by Brian Celsi (California) in his 2015 Bullfrogs debut and in the eighth, Logan Taylor's laser to Guardascione (Jacksonville) at home plate caught Keith Skinner (North Florida) steps away from a score.
After La Crosse tacked on a run against Jack Mahan (Eckered) in the bottom of the eighth, the Bullfrogs were down 4-2 heading into the final frame.
Matt De La Rosa (Lenoir-Rhyne) led off with a double down the third-base line off of one of the top closers in the Northwoods League, Ty Provencher (Long Beach State). De La Rosa scored on an error by the third baseman Chris Baker (Washington) off the bat of Franco Guardascione (Jacksonville) and with pinch runner Caleb Ratzman (Illinois State) on first, the Bullfrogs had the wheels in motion.
Ratzman proceeded to steal his 25th base of the season (1st NWL) and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. With the game tying run 90 feet away, Ty Blankmeyer (St. John's) struck out against the sidewinder Provencher and the Loggers held on for the win.
The win went to Brandon Lawson (1-1) and Luke VanLanen (0-2) was saddled with the loss. The save went to Ty Provencher (8) who is the league leader in the category.
Skip Handelsman's Bullfrogs bring a 22-14 mark into game two at the Lumberyard with another 7:05PM start tomorrow night. Green Bay plays their next home game on July 3rd against Wisconsin Rapids at 7:05PM.
