Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - The Hamilton Bulldogs won their third consecutive game by defeating the Rochester Americans 3-2 in a shootout at the Blue Cross Arena on Saturday. The shootout victory was the first in Bulldogs franchise history.
The Bulldogs record now stands at 10 wins, 11 losses, 4 ties and 1 shootout loss on the season.
The Amerks opened the game's scoring at the 17:17 mark of the first period. Rochester captain Chris Taylor won a face-off to the right of Bulldogs goaltender Dan Ellis and drew the puck back to defenceman Ryan Jorde. Then Jorde took a wrist shot, Taylor went to the front of the net and tipped the puck in to earn his seventh goal of the season.
With 28.2 seconds remaining in the first period, the Amerks Milan Bartovic was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down by Bulldogs defenceman Ron Hainsey. Bartovic attempted a deke move on Bulldogs goaltender Ellis, but Ellis extended his leg and made a toe save to keep the puck out of the Bulldogs net.
After a scoreless second period, rookie forward Corey Locke put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a power-play goal at 9:21 of the third period. The goal was initiated by a Ron Hainsey point shot. Locke took the rebound and scored his seventh goal of the season.
Then with just 1:06 remaining in regulation time, the Amerks took a 2-1 lead as Milan Bartovic took a long wrist shot from a few feet within the blue-line that fooled Ellis on the blocker side.
However, the Bulldogs Chris Higgins would send the game into overtime by scoring just 18 seconds after Bartovic's goal. Locke made a pass from behind the net, and Higgins made no mistake as he one-timed a shot through the legs of Miller.
In overtime the score wasn't decided, so the game moved onto a shootout. In the shootout Corey Locke and Andrei Kostitsyn scored goals for the Bulldogs, while the Amerks did not score, as Dan Ellis stopped all four Rochester shooters.
In goal, Bulldogs netminder Dan Ellis earned his third consecutive victory by making 33 saves on 35 shots. Rochester's Ryan Miller stopped 29 shots in the Amerks loss.
