Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NF - The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the St. John's Maple Leafs 4-3 on Wednesday night at Mile One Stadium. The victory gave Hamilton a two-game series sweep over the Maple Leafs. The Bulldogs previously earned a 2-1 win on Tuesday night in St. John's.
Despite out-shooting the Maple Leafs 14-4 in the first period, the Bulldogs came out of the opening frame trailing 1-0. Josh Holden scored his seventh goal of the season on the power play to give St. John's the lead after one period. It was the first power-play goal the Bulldogs had surrendered in the past eight games.
The Bulldogs then evened the score 1-1 at 3:09 of the second period, as Jimmie Olvestad converted a Duncan Milroy pass into the St. John's goal. It was Olvestad's seventh goal of the season.
Defenceman Karl Dykhuis gave Hamilton a 2-1 lead, on a five-on-three power play, when his slap shot from the point hit the inside post and went past Maple Leafs goaltender Mikael Tellqvist. Patrick Traverse and Milroy earned assists on Dykhuis' fourth goal at 12:39.
The third period saw a flurry of scoring between the Bulldogs and Maple Leafs.
Philippe Plante scored Hamilton's third goal at 1:46 of the third period as he one-timed a Chris Higgins' pass for his second goal of the season.
The Maple Leafs' Josh Holden earned his second goal of the game at the 6:39 mark.
St. John's pulled even to make the score 3-3 when Brad Leeb found the back of the Bulldogs' net at 17:53.
However, Bulldogs' forward Duncan Milroy capped off a three-point night by scoring the game-winning goal with just 1:48 remaining in regulation time. Milroy, the game's first star, posted his first career three-point game in the AHL.
Bulldogs goaltender Olivier Michaud extended his own personal unbeaten streak to four games as he made 23 saves on the night. Mikael Tellqvist suffered the loss despite stopping 34 Bulldogs' shots.
The Bulldogs now are now riding a six-game winning streak, which ties a season-high.
