Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Bossier-Shreveport goaltender Brian Foster stopped the Mississippi RiverKings with a 2-0 shutout on Sunday, October 10th at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. Foster saved all 15 shots sent his way as the Mudbugs (1-0-1) won for the first time in the pre-season. Mississippi fell to 1-1-0 with the loss.
Shane Hart provided all the scoring the Mudbugs would need with a power play goal in the first period at 14:52. Jeff Martens and Justin Aikins set up Hart for what would turn out to be the eventual game-winning goal.
There would be no further scoring until late in the game, when Travis Clayton provided Bossier-Shreveport an insurance goal with under four minutes remaining in the contest. His red-lighter was assisted by Steven Crampton and Shawn Limpright at 16:17 of the final period.
Mississippi struggled offensively in the game, as the RiverKings were held to only eight shots on goal the final two periods (four in each period) for a game total of 15. By contrast, Bossier-Shreveport increased the pressure in each frame, from eight shots in the first period, to 12 in the second and 16 shots on goal in the final period of play.
J.J. Koehler led the attack for the RiverKings with three shots on goal. Tyler Sheldrake, Nathan Lutz, and Derek Landmesser each had two shots on net.
Bossier-Shreveport scored once in five power play chances, while the RiverKings failed in all three of their extra man opportunities. Only nine minors were meted out in the game, four to the Mudbugs and five to the RiverKings.
Foster's 15 save effort gave him a victory in his first game with the Mudbugs. RiverKings netminder Kyle McNulty was staunch in the net in a losing effort, making 34 saves.
Mississippi completed its pre-season schedule with a game at Evansville, Indiana tomorrow night at 7:05. The RiverKings open regular season play on Friday, October 15th at Bossier-Shreveport, with the Mudbugs returning the favor for the RiverKings home opener Saturday, October 16th at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. Game time is 7:05 PM.
NOTE: Sunday's game was the debut for defenseman Nathan Lutz, who joined the RiverKings late this week. Lutz, who brings a lengthy resume that includes experience in the American, United Hockey League, and ECHL, played last season in Italy for Allegre HC. The native of Mistatim, Saskatchewan has also played one season internationally in Denmark.
