Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Rookie goaltender Bobby Jarosz turned aside 45 of 46 shots, including 23 in the third period, to backstop the Arizona Sundogs to a 2-1 win over the defending Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Champion Rapid City Rush in each clubs' final exhibition contest of the 2010 preseason.
Defenseman Chris Kane assisted on both Arizona tallies including the eventual game-winner with 5:45 to play in the middle frame. Skating in the left corner, Steve Kaye dropped a pass to Kane along the boards that the defenseman quickly returned as the forward cut to the net. Kaye collected the return feed and wristed a shot past Rush netminder Danny Battochio, regaining a one-goal lead for the Sundogs.
Torren Delforte also assisted on the eventual game-winner for his second helper of the preseason.
Head Coach and General Manager Marco Pietroniro adjusted the roster for the team's second and final preseason contest Sunday night, inserting Jason Visser, Nathan Sigmund, Samuel Grenache and Mike Nelson into the lineup in place of Joey Sides, Kevin Jarman, Marc-Andre Labelle and Justin Taylor. The CHL deadline for finalized regular season rosters is 1:00pm (Arizona time) on Thursday, Oct. 14.
Arizona struck first to take an early 1-0 lead in Sunday's contest. Stationed between the circles, Visser redirected a Kane shot from the point past Battochio 5:33 into the contest. Mark Kolanos also assisted on the play for his second point of the preseason.
Rapid City pulled even at one on its second power play opportunity of the opening frame with just over six minutes to play in the period. Already shorthanded, Sundogs defenseman Tyler Butler lost his stick allowing Andrew Martin to skate in close before sneaking a shot near side past Jarosz for his first goal and second point of the preseason.
Butler nearly made it 3-1 midway through the third period, ringing a shot off the near post as his club skated 5-on-4 after an Andrew Smale high sticking penalty.
Battochio allowed two goals on 27 shots through 40 minutes of play before yielding to Rapid City backup Jimmy Spratt who steered aside all seven shots faced in the third period.
The Rush outshot the Sundogs 46-34 in the contest. Arizona was held scoreless on four man-advantage opportunities while Rapid City converted once on eight power play tries.
Arizona is now 5-3-1 all-time in preseason games.
