Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Buffalo Bisons routed the Gwinnett Stripers 8-0 Friday in game two of their four-game series at Coolray Field.
Dwight Smith Jr. led Buffalo's attack, going 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.
Smith's long ball (6) came with one out in the top of the first inning against left-hander Max Fried, pitching on a rehab assignment for the Atlanta Braves.
In the third, Smith won a 14-pitch battle with Fried as he walked to put runners on first and second with no outs and the dangerous Vladimir Guerrero Jr. coming to the plate. Fried got Guerrero to ground into a double play and eventually worked out of the frame unharmed.
Gunnar Heidt blasted his first career Triple-A homer in the fourth to make the score 2-0. Fried got the first out of the fifth, but allowed a double to Smith, ending his night after 4.1 innings. Chad Bell took over and allowed an RBI double to Anthony Alford, charging Fried (L, 2-5) with three earned runs on four hits, four walks and five strikeouts on the night.
Bell gave up another run in the fifth and three more in the sixth as the Bisons opened the score to 7-0. Corbin Clouse fanned four batters over 2.0 perfect innings in relief, then Adam McCreery allowed a run in the ninth for the 8-0 final.
Right-hander Murphy Smith (W, 3-4) held the Stripers scoreless over 5.0 innings of work, allowing only four hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Conor Fisk and Taylor Guerrieri polished off the shutout for Buffalo with 2.0 scoreless innings apiece. It was the Stripers' first time being shut out since a 5-0 loss to Charlotte on July 7.
Guerrero Jr. finished the night 1-for-4 with a walk. Alford added a hit and two RBIs.
Gwinnett tallied nine hits on the night - all singles. Sean Kazmar Jr. was 4-for-4, while Michael Reed and Rio Ruiz were each 2-for-4.
With the series tied 1-1, right-hander Touki Toussaint (2-0, 2.01 ERA) gets the ball for the Stripers (59-62) Saturday at 6:05 p.m. in his first start since his 6.0-inning, one-run performance in his Major League debut on August 13. Left-hander Shawn Morimando (1-3, 7.03 ERA) makes his first start for the Bisons (57-64) after spending time with Columbus earlier in the year. Tony Schiavone will have the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 5:35 p.m.
