April 17, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Buffalo Destroyers News Release
(BUFFALO, NY)- The Buffalo Destroyers finish their three game road trip Friday night in Los Angeles to face the Avengers at 10:30 p.m. EST at the Staples Center. The game will air on the Destroyers Radio Network and their flagship station 107.7 FM WNSA.
The Destroyers have elevated QB/WR/LB Kevin Mason to the active squad this week and he is battling with Chris Sanders for the starting QB job this week. Sanders started the last two games for Buffalo while Mason has served in the backup role during those games. Mason has not started an AFL game at QB since June 10, 2000.
"It could be Chris or Kevin, we need someone in their who can provide a spark," said Destroyers head coach Ron Selesky. "Chris did a great job two weeks ago and Kevin has prepared himself well. Kevin hasn't played quarterback in a while, but is a quarterback by nature.
Buffalo's defense will look to shut down the Avengers high powered offense that put up 76 points last week, the most in team history. Los Angeles is second in scoring offense (59.2 points per game) and fourth in total offense (292.9 yards per game). The Destroyers come in ranked third in scoring defense (45.2 points per game), third in total defense (252.4 yards per game) and second in pass defense (233.6).
Los Angeles WR/LB Greg Hopkins earned AFL Ironman of the Week for his two-way performance by hauling in nine receptions for 162 yards and five touchdowns in the Avengers' 82-76 overtime loss to Arizona on Sunday. On his way to garnering Ironman of the Game honors, the defending Ironman of the Year, added 3.5 total tackles and a nine yard interception return for a touchdown, the ninth of his career (tied for first all-time), giving him six touchdowns for the game and matching a team record.
WR/DB Jarrail Jackson continues to shine for Buffalo. He leads the team with 1,283 all-purpose yards and is the team's leading kick returner, second in rushing, fourth in receiving and third in touchdowns. He has also played solid as a defensive back when called upon. He has nine tackles, two interceptions and two pass breakups.
The Destroyers return home Saturday, April 26 to host the Indiana Firebirds at 7:00 p.m. at the HSBC Arena. Mini packs and group tickets are on sale now, call the Destroyers ticket office at 716-881-4444!
