September 8, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Laredo Bucks News Release

CALGARY, AB- The Calgary Flames announced Tuesday that Laredo Bucks goaltender Dan Spence will attend their NHL prospects camp this week at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Spence signed with the Bucks Thursday for the 2009-10 season.

Spence is one of 35 players that were invited to the Flames camp, which runs from September 8th-12th. Spence was placed in the ‘B' group and will wear number 31 at the camp. The two groups will play against each other in a scrimmage on Friday, with the Flames main camp slated to begin on September 12th.

"This is a great opportunity for Dan, I'm very happy for him," said Bucks President/General Manager and Head Coach Terry Ruskowski. "He will get a lot of exposure and learn quite a bit with the Flames."

The 21-year old Spence played five seasons of Junior Hockey where he had a combined record of 106-68-17 in the WHL and OHL. Spence notched 13 career junior shutouts.

"He played juniors in Calgary for four years so the Flames know what he can bring to the table," Ruskowski said. "I'm sure he will impress a lot of people and turn some heads up there this week, and it will give him great experience to bring to our camp in October."

Spence, from Langley, British Columbia, spent most of last season with the OHL's Sarnia Sting where he went 29-19-6, with a 2.78 G.A.A and a .914 sv % in 54 games played. Spence started last season in the WHL with the Calgary Hitmen going 4-2 with a 1.98 G.A.A, and a .933 G.A.A.

The 6'0, 190 pound Spence played most of his junior career with the Hitmen, suiting up in Calgary from 2004-2008. Spence, who is the team's all-time wins leader, played 147 career games with the Hitmen, posting a 77-49-11 mark. Spence won 30 games in 2006-07, and 29 in 2007-08.

In the 2007-2008 campaign Spence was named an Eastern Conference Second-Team All-Star, as well as the Hitmen's Humaitarian of the Year. That season Spence went 29-12-4, with a 2.19 G.A.A, and a .907 sv. %.

In 2006-07 Spence played in a WHL career-high 56 games, posting a 30-22-4 record, to go along with a 2.62 G.A.A, and a .905 sv.%, and a career-high six shutouts.

2009-10 CHL Rookie of the Year Darryl Smith is currently at the Atlanta Thrashers NHL Prospects camp this week in Traverse City, Michigan.

The Bucks will open their eighth season in the Gateway City on October 24th at the LEC, and will host the 2010 CHL All-Star Game January 13th. For ticket information call 718-BUCK (2825).
