Bucks Play Scrooge, Beat Bats 3-1

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Austin Ice Bats 3-1 Saturday night at the Laredo Entertainment Center. The Bucks won their second straight game, and have won four of their last five to improve to 20-7-2 (42 points).

Matt Summers gave the Bucks a 2-1 lead with 8:03 left in the third period as he sent a shot from the right circle past Ice Bats goaltender Doug Groenstege. It was Summers' fifth goal of the season. Jeff Genovy picked up the assist.

Jeff Bes added an empty net goal with one minute to go to make it 3-1. It was Bes' 16th goal of the season, and second in as many nights.

Dustin Traylen picked up the win in net for Laredo as he set aside 22 of 23 Ice Bats shots. Traylen improves his record to 12-6-1.

The Bucks (12-3 at home) jumped out on top just 1:11 into the game as Chris Korchinski sent a shot throught the crease from the left side past Austin goaltender Doug Groentege. It was Korchinski's 12th goal of the year, with Rane Carnegie and Brent MacSween picking up the assists.

Laredo killed off two Austin power-plays in the first 20 minutes. The Bucks were outshot in the first period 5-4.

Austin (6-20-1) tied the game up at 1-1 at the 4:47 mark of the second period. Taylor Reska picked up a loose puck right in front of Traylen, and sent it in past Traylen's right side.

The Bucks penalty killing unit was called upon to kill off three Ice Bats power-plays in the second period.

Laredo outshot Austin in the period 14-9.

Groenstage suffered the hard-luck loss in net for Austin, as he stopped 29 of 31 Bucks shots in only his second game as an Ice Bat.

The Bucks are off for the Christmas holiday, and will travel to Arizona to face the Sundogs for two weekend games next Friday and Saturday December 28th and 29th. As of Saturday night the Bucks hold a five-point lead on the Sundogs in the Southern Conference standings.
