COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks put forth a solid effort in a 5-3 win over the Austin Ice Bats in a pre season game at the Arctic Wolf Ice Center in College Station, Texas on Thursday night. Steve Weidlich scored two goals as the Bucks picked up the victory in front of 1,011 fans. Laredo is in Austin on Friday night for a rematch. The Bucks will play an inter squad game at the LEC on Sunday at 4 p.m. Admission to the inter-squad game is two non perishable items of food that will be collected and donated to the South Texas Food Bank. The Bucks are offering a family four pack of season tickets for the 2006-07 CHL regular season, which works out to just over $7 a seat per game and is a 48 % savings off walkup prices. The Ice Bats opened the scoring as forward Julian Smith cut down the left wing and ripped home a slap shot from the top of the left circle 4:52 into the contest. The Bucks came back to tie the game on the penalty kill. Forward Don Melnyk got loose on a nice pass from defenseman Josh Francis and went top shelf with a wrist shot at 12:21. Laredo then took the lead with more special teams work. Defenseman Matt Simonson fired a shot from the point that was blocked, but forward Andrew Shennan hopped on the loose puck and fired it home low glove side at 15:26 for a 2-1 Bucks lead.
Laredo extended their lead to 3-1 with more good special teams play in the second period. Forward Neil Clark found Weidlich in the high slot where he blasted a slap shot into the back of the net at 2:28. Austin came back with a power play goal of their own as forward Brandon Doria slipped the puck into the cage with a wrap around at 3:59.
The Ice Bats quickly tied the game on a top shelf wrist shot by forward Jordan Bianchin just 16 seconds into the third period. The Bucks had the answer just 30 seconds later as Weidlich lit the lamp for the second time in the game to make it 4-3 Laredo. The Bucks got some breathing room at 11:36 when forward Chris Korchinski stuffed in a loose puck to extend the lead to two goals. FINAL SCORE Laredo 5, Austin 3.
Goalie Rick Nichol started for the Bucks, allowing two goals on 18 shots in 31:02 of work. Chris Obradovich got the win in net for Laredo, allowing one goal on 15 shots in 28:52. Andrew Martin allowed five goals on 55 shots and took the loss. Laredo was 2-5 on the power play while Austin was 1-4. The Bucks out shot the Ice Bats 55-33.
Laredo will have an inter-squad game on Sunday, October 15th, at the LEC.
