Buccaneers Face Big Three Game Weekend

February 25, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Des Moines Buccaneers News Release

The Buccaneers have a big weekend in front of them as it's the only time all season they play three games in three consecutive days. With just seventeen games left in their regular season, the Buccaneers have a big opportunity to make a big push for the playoffs as two of their three opponents this weekend currently stand between them and a playoff spot.

On Friday, February 26th, the Sioux Falls Stampede come to Buccaneer Arena for the third game in their six game season series at 7:05 PM, which is also Public Service Night. Des Moines defeated Sioux Falls in Urbandale by a 6-2 score on Saturday, January 9th, in a game where Joey Kubachka scored twice, seven different Buccaneers had multiple points and Des Moines tied the USHL record this season for shots on goal with 59. The Stampede returned the favor and won the rematch in Sioux Falls on Saturday, February 6th. In the game David Keefer scored a MidAmerican Energy power play goal halfway through the third period to cut it to a one-goal game but the Stampede got two late goals by Josh Passolt, including an empty netter, and the game ended up being closer than the final score of 5-2 seemed. Sioux Falls currently sits fourth in the Western Conference, though the Buccaneers have a game in hand on the Stampede, and if the season were to end today, they would occupy the last playoff spot in the West.

Saturday, February 27th, marks the last time the Buccaneers will see the Dubuque Fighting Saints during the regular season and the only time Des Moines travels to Mystique Community Ice Center with the puck drop at 7:05 PM. The two teams have only faced each other one other time during the season back on Friday, October 30th, when the Buccaneers erased a 2-0 Dubuque lead and score the final four goals of the game. Zach Jordan and Georgy Gorodetsky each scored in the third period to come away with a 4-2 victory at Buccaneer Arena. Dubuque will be a tough task as they have lost a league low six times on their home ice and they currently have picked up points in their last eight games, winning seven of the eight.

The weekend concludes Sunday afternoon from Young Arena in Waterloo with a 3:05 PM start time. For the Buccaneers the Waterloo series has gone the same way as the Sioux Falls and Dubuque series with the home team prevailing each time; Waterloo defeated Des Moines 6-0 on Friday, November 20th, but got their revenge on Friday, February 5th, with five goals in the first period, including two from Nikita Pavlychev, en route to a 6-3 victory. Waterloo currently sits four points ahead of the Buccaneers in 5th place in the Western Conference.
