Bruins Stymied in the Wilderness
November 6, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Austin Bruins News Release
The first-place Austin Bruins (12-4-0) lost a defensive battle in the Iron Range Wednesday, falling 3-0 to the expansion Minnesota Wilderness (12-2-3) in Cloquet. It was the Bruins third straight road loss, and the eighth consecutive win for the Wilderness.
There was no scoring in the first period, as the Wilderness outshot the Bruins 14-5, but the story of the frame was the fact that most of the period was played 5-on-4. There were four penalties, two-apiece, and neither team was able to convert on the man-advantage.
Early in the second period, the Wilderness got on the board first, when a bouncing buck led to a turnover in the Bruins zone and Brett Heikkila (Marquette, MI) fed Richard Buri (Nitra, Slovakia) for a one-timer that beat Austin goalie Justin Quale (Minnetonka, MN) over the left shoulder. The teams exchanged penalties seconds apart right after Buri s goal, and Terry Leabo (Fargo, ND) fired a one-timer past Quale from the slot on the 4-on-4 to give the Wilderness a 2-0 lead. The Bruins failed to convert on a couple of power-plays again in the second, eventually going 0-7 on the man-advantage for the game.
The Wilderness preserved their 2-0 lead in the third period with stingy defensive play in front of goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo (Vantaa, Finland), and added a late empty-netter to defeat the Bruins 3-0. Kaskisuo made 20 saves in his second shutout in as many starts, and Quale stopped 22 Wilderness shots in the loss.
This weekend, the Bruins return home to Riverside Arena in Austin where they are 5-0. The Bismarck Bobcats will be in town for the first time since April when the two teams met in the Central Division Finals. The puck drops at 7:05pm both Friday and Saturday night, with both games airing on fasthockey.com, and Saturday s contest on 1480AM KAUS.
