Austin Bruins News Release
AUSTIN, Minn. - Ben Almquist scored with only one second remaining in regulation to force overtime, but the Bruins fell in the shootout to Minot, 3-2.
For the second night in a row, Connor Mylymok kicked off the scoring. After a back and forth first period, Mylymok was able to pound home a rebound goal with just 1:01 left in the opening period. The goal was Mylymok's fifth of the season and his third on the weekend after scoring two on Friday night.
Out of the locker room in the second, Minot leveled the score at one goal apiece when Nik Armstrong-Kingkade scored on the powerplay, his team-leading eighteenth goal of the season. The Bruins had their chances later in the period to regain the lead but Garrity turned aside every chance and both teams headed to the break even at 1-1.
In the third period, the Bruins gave up the lead, the first time the Minotauros led on the weekend, when Owen Baumgarther netted his fifth goal of the season. Down 2-1, the Bruins pulled Miller in favor of the extra attacker and it paid off. With time dwindling down, Garrity made a miraculous save moving from his left to his right but the ensuing chaos resulted in Ben Almquist finding the loose puck and burying it with only :01 second left to go in regulation. With the score now tied 2-2, overtime was needed but neither team was able to score during the three-on-three extra frame. In the shootout, Armstrong-Kingkade flipped a backhand shot over Miller's glove hand for the first and only goal of the shootout. Austin couldn't convert on their chances and Minot earned the win, 3-2.
With the shootout loss the Bruins fall to 14-9-2-3 on the season while the Minotauros improve to 16-8-1-2. The game was the final home-game of the 2019 portion of the Bruins schedule, and their next four games come on the road. Bruins are back at home on January 10, 2019 for a Friday night game against the St. Cloud Blizzard.
