Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Prior to Tuesday's contest, the Stockton Ports had only won twice when trailing after the eighth inning. Stockton newcomer Jaycob Brugman helped increased that number on Tuesday at Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports grabbed their only lead of the game in the bottom of the ninth, good for a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Modesto Nuts to open a three-game series.
Modesto opened the scoring with two outs in the top of the first on back-to-back home runs from Mike Tauchman and Will Swanner off Ports starter Seth Streich to take a 2-0 lead. The Nuts increased their lead to 3-0 in the third when Chris O'Dowd reached on a strikeout wild pitch to open the inning and scored on a two-out infield RBI single by Dean Espy to make it a 3-0 ballgame.
Stockton's first run came in the bottom of the third. With one out, Daniel Robertson doubled and scored on an ensuing double by Brugman to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Nuts scored their final run of the contest and their final run off Streich in the fifth. Streich issued his lone walk of the night to Jordan Ribera to start the inning and Ribera went on to score on a two-out ground rule double by Matt Wessinger to put Modesto's lead back to three runs at 4-1.
Streich received a no-decision, going five innings and allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out six.
The Ports scored their final run off Nuts starter Matt Flemer in the sixth. Renato Nunez led off with a double and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by Bruce Maxwell to make it 4-2.
Flemer received a no-decision for Modesto, going seven strong innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight.
Alving Mejias came on in relief of Flemer to pitch the eighth and gave up a leadoff home run to Brugman to make it a 4-3 contest. Mejias would leave the game with two outs and Ryon Healy at third, but John Keck would come on and get Maxwell to ground out to end the inning.
After Jonathan Joseph pitched two perfect innings beginning in the sixth, Michael Ynoa (4-2) entered to pitch the eighth and pitched around a leadoff walk. In the ninth, Ynoa walked the first two batters but went on to record a pair of strikeouts to help him escape the jam unscathed to preserve a one-run deficit.
Bruce Kern (0-3) took over for Modesto in the ninth to try for the save. After striking out Wade Kirkland to open the inning, Kern allowed a single to Crocker and a double to Ryan Gorton to put runners at second and third with one out. After Kern intentionally walked Robertson to load the bases, Brugman came up and hit a sinking line drive on a 3-2 pitch to shortstop Rosell Herrera. Herrera had the ball deflect off of him into shallow right field. Crocker came in from third to score the tying run and Gorton rounded third and beat the throw home for the winning run on what was scored a two-run single for Brugman, giving Stockton a come-from-behind 5-4 victory.
Ynoa picked up the win for Stockton while Kern suffered the blown save and the loss for Modesto.
The Ports and Nuts play the middle game of their three-game set on Wednesday at Banner Island Ballpark. Jake Sanchez (2-0, 2.70 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto left-hander Ryan Carpenter (2-4, 3.91 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
