Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Jack Mayfield and Conrad Gregor each homered in a game in which the JetHawks allowed seven unearned runs to score and lost to the Inland Empire 66ers, 14-8, on Tuesday night at The Hangar.
Lancaster (50-39) was behind from the start as Sherman Johnson greeted new JetHawks starter Evan Grills (0-1) with a leadoff home run to open the first inning. The first of three Austin Elkins errors later in the inning led to two unearned runs and the 66ers took an early 3-0 lead.
Inland Empire (31-58) made it 6-0 with three more unearned runs in the second inning. Elkins allowed a potential double play grounder to squeak between his legs and Inland Empire took advantage.
Mayfield hit his third home run, a three-run shot, in the bottom of the second inning to cut Inland Empire's lead in half. Danry Vasquez added a two-run single later in the inning but was picked off of first base by reliever Chris O'Grady (1-2) to end the rally.
In the third inning, Elkins threw wide to second base on a potential force play to extend the inning. Johnson took advantage later in the frame with a two out, two-run triple to make the score 8-5.
Grills allowed eight runs (one earned) on five hits in four innings in his Cal League debut. He struck out two, walked one batter and hit Wade Hinkle twice.
Josh Hader took over and allowed four runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings. Alex Allbritton hit his first professional home run to start the sixth inning and after a run scored in the seventh, Inland Empire chased Hader with a three-run eighth. The final run was charged to reliever Daniel Minor.
Gregor launched a solo homer, his seventh of the season, in the ninth inning but the JetHawks couldn't put together a big enough rally as Eduard Santos struck out the side.
The 14 runs were a season-high for Inland Empire.
The JetHawks have now lost 13 of their last 17 and nine of their last 12 at home.
The clubs play the second game of the series on Wednesday night at The Hangar. Brian Holmes will start against Elliot Morris. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
