Bakersfield Blaze News Release

In a mostly well-pitched contest in San Jose, the Bakersfield Blaze made one too many small mistakes, and the San Jose Giants capitalized one too many times, dealing our Bako boys a tough loss, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game set by the Bay on Tuesday night.

The Blaze struck first, though just for a single tally. In the top of the 1st, Brent Peterson doubled to right, and moved to third on an error. Two batters later, Sean Buckley singled him home for the 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless inning, the Giants evened the contest on a Blake Miller solo homer in the 2nd, and took the lead on a two-out, double-and-single rally in the 3rd.

The starters, Daniel Wright (L, 5-2) and Joe Biagini (W, 6-5) traded zeroes into the 6th in a nice duel.

The contest took a turn in the 6th, however, and not in the Blaze favor. Jeff Gelalich briefly tied the contest on a mammoth solo homer in the top half, his second in as many nights, but the Giants came back in the home half, taking advantage of wild pitches for extra outs, scoring three times, and taking a 5-2 lead.

And that is how it would come to an end. The Blaze put a runner aboard in the 7th and 8th, but could not mount a rally against the Giants bullpen, and the combination of Bryce Bandilla and Tyler Mizenko (S, 7) closed it out.

For the Blaze, a few key mistakes seemed to cost the team, as a weird batter's interference call cost the Blaze a potential run in the 1st inning, and a baserunning mistake kept the team from potentially putting together a rally in the later frames.

Off the seven game winning streak, the Blaze have now dropped two in a row, but get right back at it on Wednesday at 7:05pm in the middle game with the Giants. The pitching matchup is Ismael Guillon for the Blaze, and Pat Young for the Giants.

Make sure to tune in to every moment of Blaze baseball action as Dan Besbris brings the call via the internet at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio. The pregame show begins five minutes before first pitch.
