Zion, Ill. - John Brownell and the Lake County Fielders (40-58) crushed the Rockford RiverHawks (46-51) in a 14-1 victory on Sports Physical Therapy and Rehab Specialists Fireworks night at the ballpark in Zion Friday night. The Fielders backed Brownell's record-setting 14 strikeouts with an unstoppable offense.
Three Fielders had a multi-RBI game with Josh Short setting a franchise record for most RBIs in a game with six. Kyle Higgins was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI; Anthony Esquer had two RBI and Amos Ramon was 4-for-5 with a double.
The Fielders jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second off starting pitcher Kyle Ruwe (6-9). Amos Ramon led off with a single up the middle and was brought around to score on an RBI single from Anthony Esquer. Kyle Higgins plated Esquer with a sacrifice fly and Josh Short came up with a two-run single to score Kevin Haas and Guillermo Martinez.
Lake County added another run in the fourth after Martinez led off with his second single of the game. He advanced to second on a Higgins groundout, stole third and scored on a Juan Valdes sacrifice fly.
The Fielders kept the offense rolling in the fifth, adding three runs to lead by an eight run deficit. Ramon led off with a double, his third hit of the game, and scored on the second RBI single from Esquer. Higgins came to the plate and delivered a two-run triple to score Esquer and Martinez.
Ruwe was pulled after going five innings, surrendering eight runs (all earned) on ten hits while striking out three and walking three. He was tagged with the loss.
Short blew the game open in the eighth with a grand slam off John Muller for his sixth RBI of the game. Muller was pulled after McFall hit an RBI double to score Valdes, giving the Fielders a 14-0 lead.
John Brownell (4-9) was nearly flawless in his 21st appearance this season to earn his fourth win. He pitched all nine innings giving up only five hits and one run on a Franco Valdes home run. In his complete game effort, Brownell struck out 14 RiverHawks, setting a franchise record for most strikes out in a game.
The Fielders look to keep their offense rolling tomorrow as they take on the RiverHawks in game three at 1:00pm on Lindenhurst Health and Fitness Family Day. Lake County will send Alec Lewis to the mound opposite Rockford's Kyle Wright.
